Whether you're working toward veterinary licensure or supporting the candidates who are,
Welcome. Tell us who you are, and we'll take you straight to the answers that apply to you.
Candidate
This FAQ section is designed as a self-service reference for anyone who has applied, or plans to apply, for an ICVA assessment — the NAVLE, the NAVLE Self-Assessment, the VEA, a Species Specific Exam, or the Wisconsin Laws and Rules Exam. If you are a licensing board, veterinary school, or ICVA volunteer looking for partner-related information, see the companion section, the ICVA Partner FAQ.
Every question below is tagged by topic and linked to its source page or PDF on icva.net, so you can click straight through for the full official detail, forms, or downloads. Related questions elsewhere in this document are cross-referenced at the end of each answer.

Additional Resources
Check the News and Updates page regularly — it's ICVA's central hub for announcements affecting candidates, including policy changes (like the 2026 retake policy update), exam structure changes, and deadlines. The ICVA Blog offers longer-form content, and the quarterly In Focus newsletter is distributed primarily to ICVA's partner organizations but is worth reviewing for context and additional information.
- Contact
The Candidate FAQ is written for candidates. Licensing boards, veterinary school staff (including VEA administration), and ICVA volunteers should refer to the companion ICVA Partner FAQ, which covers board score access and transfers, VEA administration, volunteering and committee nominations, and partner-specific communication channels.

ICVA Assessments - Candidate ICVAID
Your ICVAID is the unique identifier ICVA uses to track you across every process you'll touch as a candidate: logging into the Candidate Dashboard, ordering a duplicate NAVLE score report and filing a grievance all require it. Keep it somewhere safe alongside your date of birth, since the two together (plus an access code) are how you'll authenticate your account to enter most ICVA tools.
- Dashboard, ICVA ID
Use the “Find My ICVAID” lookup tool and enter your first name, last name, and date of birth exactly as you provided them when you registered.
- ICVA ID
Your Access Code is the unique identifier used to access your Candidate Dashboard. Candidates who recently applied for the NAVLE should allow time for payment processing and receipt of the confirmation email. Candidates with prior applications should check the original NAVLE application email or use the access code retrieval process available on the Candidate Dashboard.

NAVLE - Accommodations & Non-Standard Testing Conditions
ICVA is committed to following the principles of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by providing equal exam access to all candidates. The application process includes an opportunity for you to indicate the need for reasonable test accommodations.
ICVA distinguishes between two related but different processes: formal disability accommodations under the ADA, and temporary non-standard testing conditions for short-term medical situations. Confusing the two is one of the most common candidate mistakes, so the comparison below is worth reading closely.
|
|
Accommodations (ADA) |
Non-Standard Testing Conditions |
|
What it's for |
A documented physical or mental impairment substantially limiting a major life activity |
Temporary situations: recent surgery, injury, lactation, etc. |
|
Deadline |
Same as the testing window's application deadline (July / January / May) |
No later than 14 days before the testing window starts |
|
Validity |
Applies to all future NAVLE attempts (U.S. boards) |
One year from approval date only |
|
Timing formats offered |
1.25x, 1.5x, or 2x time; more frequent breaks; or 2x and more frequent breaks |
Modified break schedule (~70–85 min/day vs. 50 min standard) |
- Accommodations, Deadlines, NAVLE
Available accommodations include timing formats with more frequent breaks, 1.25x/1.5x/2x extended time, 2x time combined with more frequent breaks, or other accommodations by special request; any extended-time or added-break timing format accommodation moves you to a two-day testing schedule. If you've received the same accommodation before (for example on the SAT, GRE, MCAT, or through a school IEP/504 plan), submit that proof plus a current certification from a qualified professional. If this is a first-time or different request, you'll need an evaluation or a a typewritten, signed, dated letter on letterhead from a qualified professional that includes their qualifications, their evaluation, and why the accommodation is necessary.
- Accommodations, Deadlines, NAVLE
Complete the NAVLE Accommodation Request Form, check the accommodation box on your initial NAVLE application – even if you have documentation on file from a previous NAVLE attempt – and submit your personal statement plus documentation as a PDF (a signature page may be a .jpg/.jpeg) by emailing accommodations@icva.net or uploading through the Candidate Dashboard. Word documents and cloud-storage links (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.) are not accepted. Please keep in mind that requests are processed in order of receipt, so be sure to submit your request well in advance of the application deadline in case additional information is needed.
- Accommodations, Dashboard, Deadlines, NAVLE
The processing of your NAVLE Scheduling and Admission Permit can begin only after your application to test and your accommodation request have both been received by the applicable deadline and approved. Permit delivery timing varies and can take at least 4 weeks after approval for the test (and for accommodations, if applicable).
- Accommodations, Deadlines, NAVLE, Prometric, Scheduling
Once you receive your NAVLE Scheduling and Admission Permit, we recommend contacting Prometric as soon as possible to schedule your examination appointment(s) using the phone number provided in Section 1 of the permit. If you require accommodations, or need to reschedule an appointment with accommodations, scheduling should be completed by phone and not done through the Prometric ProScheduler. After scheduling or rescheduling, be sure to record your confirmation number for future reference. ICVA cannot retrieve this number for you.
- Accommodations, Deadlines, NAVLE, Prometric, Scheduling
Please note that if your accommodations require two-day testing, your testing dates are not required to be scheduled on consecutive days. You will need to select a second test date within the allotted 14-day testing period. You may also choose a different testing center for the second day of testing.
- Accommodations, Deadlines, NAVLE, Prometric, Scheduling
You can still test under standard conditions, or withdraw, but keep in mind that the ICVA policy is that there are no exceptions, extensions, transfers, or refunds.
- Accommodations, Deadlines, Fees, NAVLE
When necessary, you can bring Pre-Approved Items to use while in the Prometric testing centers that do not require ADA accommodations or approval from the ICVA. The permissible items are typically required for chronic or acute medical situations and include standard items and medical devices. Prometric test center administrators will visually inspect your pre-approved item(s) without directly touching them or asking you to remove the item unless otherwise stated on the list of Pre-Approved Items.
- Accommodations, NAVLE, Prometric
Non-Standard Testing Conditions cover temporary medical circumstances — recovering from surgery, an injury, lactation needs, etc. — rather than a documented disability. You'll submit a completed Non-Standard Testing Conditions Request Form plus a typewritten, signed letter from a qualified professional (translated into English if needed, at your expense) no later than 14 days before your testing window starts. Approval is valid for one year only, so you'll need to reapply if you need the same non-standard testing conditions for a later attempt.
- Accommodations, Deadlines
Yes. Candidates planning to obtain a license to practice veterinary medicine in Canada must request NAVLE accommodations through the National Examining Board (NEB) rather than through ICVA's standard U.S./territory process. Direct Canada-specific questions to NEB at neb-bne@cvma-acmv.org.
- Canada, Eligibility, NAVLE
Yes, for U.S. licensing boards — once approved, your accommodation applies to all of your future NAVLE attempts. Canadian candidates must reapply through the National Examining Board (NEB) each time. Non-Standard Testing Conditions approvals, by contrast, only last one year and must be renewed even for U.S.-board candidates. Please note, you still need to mark on your NAVLE application that you are requesting accommodations, even if the accommodation was approved for a previous testing window.
- Accommodations, Retake Policy
NAVLE - Eligibility & Applying
ICVA administers three NAVLE testing windows per year. Always confirm current dates on the NAVLE page and in the Candidate Handbook, since dates shift slightly year to year.
- Application, Deadlines, NAVLE
NAVLE Application | NAVLE Overview | Candidate Handbook (PDF)
Nothing can be done after the fact — ICVA is explicit that all application, eligibility, and accommodations materials must be received by the stated deadline, with no exceptions, extensions, transfers, or refunds. Build in buffer time, especially if you need eligibility verification from your school, educational equivalency program, or licensing board.
- Application, Deadlines, NAVLE

All exams must be completed within the approved testing window. If you do not test during that window, you must submit a new application and pay the full fee to take the NAVLE in a future window.

NAVLE Application | NAVLE Overview | Candidate Handbook (PDF)
(1) Determine where to apply: directly through ICVA, through your licensing board, or through Canada’s National Examining Board (NEB).
(2) Submit your NAVLE application through that route and pay the required fee.
(3) Allow a few business days for ICVA to review and approve your eligibility.
(4) Receive your Scheduling and Admission Permit by email, typically at least four weeks after approval, and follow the instructions to create your MyNBME account.
(5) Schedule your appointment at a test center in your selected region using Prometric’s ProScheduler or the contact instructions in your permit.
(6) Save your Prometric confirmation number; ICVA cannot retrieve it for you.
(7) On test day, arrive at least 30 minutes early with your permit and a valid photo ID.
- Application, NAVLE, Scheduling
Access the application using a single browser window or tab. ICVA's own guidance notes that using multiple windows/tabs at once can cause the session to behave unpredictably.
- Application
Senior students enrolled in an AVMA COE-accredited college may take the NAVLE up to two times before graduation, provided their expected graduation date is within 10 months of the last date of the applicable testing window. If you do not meet the graduation requirements or have already taken the NAVLE twice, the online application will not permit you to apply until after you graduate. It is important that you carefully review the requirements to confirm your eligibility to avoid violating the Ethical Behavior Investigation and Appeal Policy.
- Application
Download and read the NAVLE Candidate Handbook (full policies and procedures), the Competency Domains document, and the Species and Diagnoses document — and, if relevant to you, the Accommodations Packet or the Non-Standard Testing Conditions Packet. All are linked from the NAVLE Application and the NAVLE overview page.
- Application, NAVLE
Candidates may have only one active application at a time. As a result, a second application cannot be submitted while an existing application remains open, and the system will prevent any additional submissions. If your NAVLE attempt is unsuccessful, you may reapply during a future application period. Details regarding application periods and testing cycles are available in the Candidate Handbook.
- Application, NAVLE
If your state application was not processed or if you need to complete a state application, please visit the ICVA state application page, scroll down to the bottom and select the board from which you are seeking approval (highlighted in orange), complete the state NAVLE application and pay the required NAVLE approval fee. Please ensure that you complete this process by the application deadline for your testing window.
- Application
If you recently submitted your NAVLE application, please allow one business day for payment processing. Once your payment has been processed, you will receive a confirmation email containing your access code, which you can use to log in to your Candidate Dashboard. As noted in the confirmation email, NAVLE application review and approval processing takes at least 2–3 business days after payment has been processed.
- Application, NAVLE
If your licensing board manages its own NAVLE approvals, contact the board directly to confirm the educational verification documents it requires. If you apply directly through ICVA, or through a board that has authorized ICVA to manage their NAVLE approvals, your AVMA COE-accredited school or educational equivalency program (ECFVG or PAVE) must send the required verification documentation to ICVA before the application deadline.
- Application
The NAVLE application includes a voluntary consent statement, authorizing the ICVA to report individual NAVLE scores (identified by name) to the candidate’s veterinary school. This consent is not required and is only for candidates who are senior students at AVMA COE-accredited veterinary schools. Scores for candidates who grant consent will be reported to the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at the candidate’s veterinary school (or their designee) shortly after the release of scores to the licensing boards. The school will receive a copy of the candidate's score report, which must be kept confidential. This information is to be used solely for internal purposes within the veterinary school, and the score report will not be included in the candidate's academic record. It is important to note that you are not required to agree to the consent statement. Consent for Canadian candidates is collected by the Canadian National Examining Board (NEB) as part of the NEB NAVLE application.
- Application, NAVLE
All candidates are provided five (5) NAVLE attempts. If you need to reapply after failing, you must complete a new NAVLE application and obtain approval by a state licensing board or the ICVA.
- Application, NAVLE, Retake Policy
If your licensing board manages its own NAVLE approvals, contact the board directly to confirm the educational verification documents it requires. If you apply directly through ICVA, or through a board that has authorized ICVA to manage their NAVLE approvals, your AVMA COE-accredited school or equivalency program (ECFVG or PAVE) must send the required verification documentation to ICVA before the application deadline ends.
- Deadlines, Eligibility, NAVLE
If your status on the Candidate Dashboard is listed as Approved and you have not requested accommodations, your verification is complete and you are eligible to schedule the exam once you receive your NAVLE Scheduling and Admission Permit. Candidates who have requested accommodations have to wait until their accommodation approval letter has been uploaded to the Candidate Dashboard before they are eligible to schedule the exam once they have received their NAVLE Scheduling and Admission Permit. Permit delivery times vary and may take at least four weeks after approval of the test application (and accommodations, if applicable). In the meantime, you can monitor your NAVLE status through the NAVLE Candidate Dashboard.
- Deadlines, Eligibility, NAVLE
If your status is listed as Not Approved, your application is not eligible for approval because the required information was not received before the application deadline or you do not meet the eligibility criteria for the examination during this testing window. Please review your Candidate Dashboard to identify the reason for the non-approval. You may also wish to contact your educational institution to confirm whether your eligibility documentation was submitted to the ICVA office for pairing and approval before the deadline. Additionally, you can contact the agency listed on your NAVLE application (or its designated NAVLE processor) to obtain further information regarding the reason for your non-approval.
- Deadlines, Eligibility, NAVLE
You apply through exactly one licensing board per application, so choose the jurisdiction where you intend to seek licensure. If you're not yet sure, or don't have a board in mind, ICVA offers a “No Board / ICVA” option. Once submitted, your selection is fixed for that application — if you later need your score sent to a different or additional jurisdiction, that's handled after score release through the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) VAULT score-transfer service, which takes about 7–14 business days and carries its own fee.
- Eligibility, Licensing Boards, NAVLE
Yes. Candidates planning to obtain a license to practice veterinary medicine in Canada must apply and satisfy the application fee through the National Examining Board (NEB) rather than through ICVA's standard U.S./territory process. The NEB also manages Canadian accommodation requests and consent forms. Direct Canada-specific questions to NEB at neb-bne@cvma-acmv.org. If you are a candidate who plans to obtain a license to practice veterinary medicine in Canada and mistakenly applied through the ICVA, your application will remain in our system but keep in mind that the ICVA policy is that there are no exceptions, extensions, transfers, or refunds. If you successfully pass the NAVLE, you can transfer your results to the Canadian National Examining Board after score release through the AAVSB’s VAULT score-transfer service.
- Canada, Eligibility, Licensing Boards, NAVLE
There are two main eligibility paths. Path one is through an AVMA Council on Education (COE) accredited program: either as a graduate, or as an enrolled student expected to graduate within 10 months of the end of the testing window (senior students may attempt the NAVLE up to two times before graduating). Path two is through certification: ECFVG candidates must first pass the BCSE, and PAVE candidates must first pass the QSE, before applying for the NAVLE. It is important that you carefully review the requirements to confirm your eligibility to avoid violating the Ethical Behavior Investigation and Appeal Policy.
- Eligibility, NAVLE
ECFVG candidates need to have passed the Basic and Clinical Sciences Examination (BCSE) before ICVA will approve their NAVLE application; PAVE candidates need to have passed the Qualifying Science Exam (QSE). Most U.S. jurisdictions only require you to have passed BCSE (Step 3 of the ECFVG process); some states require all four ECFVG steps.
- Eligibility, NAVLE
Candidate Handbook (PDF) | ECFVG | PAVE | Pathways to the NAVLE (Videos)
My veterinary school isn't a U.S. or Canadian program — can I still qualify through my degree alone?
Only if your program carries current AVMA COE accreditation. For example, UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México) was AVMA COE-accredited from March 2011 through December 31, 2025, only — graduates outside that accreditation window need to qualify through the BCSE/QSE certification route instead. Always confirm your program's current accreditation status directly with ICVA or AVMA before assuming eligibility.
- Eligibility, NAVLE
An affidavit process exists for candidates under the Cuban/Venezuelan Exile provision administered through the state of Florida and should be mailed to ICVA's Chicago office (1 E Erie St, Suite 525-2725, Chicago, IL 60611 USA).
- Eligibility, NAVLE
Minor variations are accepted: differences in capitalization or accent marks, and the presence or absence of a middle name, middle initial, or suffix. If a correction is needed, submit a NAVLE Information Change Request at least two weeks before your appointment — name changes cannot be processed within 7 business days of your exam date, and a change made after you've already tested will not retroactively update the name on your official score report.
- Exam Day, ID, Name, NAVLE
Name changes requested after you take the NAVLE will update on your candidate record but will not change the name listed on your NAVLE score report PDF. If you are considering future NAVLE score transfers to other boards, please check with the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) regarding their name change procedure, since they oversee the score archive and all official score transfers.
- Name, NAVLE
Once you have submitted the change request, please allow two (2) business days for processing. Once the request has been processed, the change will be reflected on your Candidate Dashboard. Please note that any information changes or corrections must be submitted at least seven (7) business days before your test date. If you have already been issued a NAVLE Scheduling and Admission Permit, an updated permit will be issued and emailed to you by NBME when it is ready. If you already have an appointment scheduled with Prometric, it will proceed as planned, and no further action is required on your part. Please remember to bring the updated permit to the test. Only the requested information will be changed; all other details will remain the same.
- Name, NAVLE
Yes, for a $100 nonrefundable, nontransferable fee — paid using the ICVA Online Payment Form — provided you request the change at least 10 business days before your testing window starts. If you're moving your test outside the U.S. or Canada, you'll also need to satisfy the international testing fee.
- Deadlines, Fees, NAVLE, Region, Scheduling
Once you have submitted the testing region change request, please allow two (2) business days for processing. Once the request has been processed, the ICVA Team will provide an update via email, and the change will be reflected in your MyNBME account if you are approved to test. If you have already been issued a NAVLE Scheduling and Admission Permit, a new permit will be issued and emailed to you by NBME when it is ready. Please remember to bring the new permit to the test.

NAVLE - Format, Blueprint & Prep Resources
360 multiple-choice questions across 12 blocks of 30, for a total testing time of 7 hours 36 minutes (33 minutes per block) plus up to 50 minutes of total break time and an optional 10-minute tutorial. Roughly 15–20% of items include graphics, with on-screen zoom, pan, and contrast tools plus an on-screen calculator available. You can skip and flag questions within a block, but not after you submit that block. The exam is offered in English and French only.
- Exam Day, NAVLE
Authorized breaks are allowed during the exam between testing blocks. This includes any time you spend between these blocks, whether you're staying in your seat or have left the room. If you complete the tutorial or testing blocks early, any remaining minutes will be added to your total break time. If you go over the allotted or accumulated break time, the extra time will be subtracted from your overall testing time. Unauthorized breaks are when you take a break during a testing block, requiring the proctor to file an incident report to share with the ICVA. Please keep in mind the clock does not stop during unauthorized breaks and test time is lost. Additionally, it could be investigated as a potential exam security violation.
- Exam Day, NAVLE, Prometric
During each testing block, you may skip questions or mark them for review. Before submitting the block, you can revisit your answers and make changes. Once you submit the block—or the block time expires—your answers are final, and you cannot return to those questions.
- Exam Day, NAVLE, Prometric
The NAVLE is a requirement for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the United States and Canada. The assessment is written and administered in English and French to ensure it aligns with the official language requirements outlined by United States licensing boards and Canadian regulatory bodies.
- Exam Day, NAVLE, Prometric
ICVA's Competencies document organizes the exam into four domains: Clinical Practice; Communications; Professionalism, Practice Management, and Wellness; and Preventive Medicine and Animal Welfare, each broken into specific, concrete competency statements (tasks you must be able to perform, not just topics to recognize). Pair it with the Species and Diagnoses document, which lists 13 species categories — canine, feline, equine, bovine, porcine, ovine/caprine, camelid/cervidae, poultry, pet birds, reptiles, aquatics, small mammals, and non-species-specific content — with example diagnoses organized by organ system within each. Canine and feline content together make up roughly half the exam, with equine and bovine adding another quarter or so; the remaining species make up a smaller but still meaningful share, so make sure to review them.
- NAVLE, Preparing for the NAVLE
No — both are described as guides, not exhaustive lists. ICVA is explicit that actual exam items may include conditions or tasks not specifically named in either document, so use them to prioritize and structure your review rather than treating them as a closed checklist.
- NAVLE, Preparing for the NAVLE
Yes, there are free sample assessments available. There are 20 sample items available in the tutorial which provides an answer key and overview of the delivery software. There is also a set of 5 additional sample questions available on the ICVA website.
- NAVLE, Preparing for the NAVLE
Beginning with the October–November 2026 testing window, the NAVLE will use shorter blocks and offer more frequent break opportunities. The exam will contain 360 multiple-choice questions in 12 blocks of 30, with 7 hours and 36 minutes of testing time (33 minutes per block), up to 50 minutes for breaks, and an optional 10-minute tutorial. In December 2025, ICVA also announced an independent third-party audit of the NAVLE’s fairness and integrity, with periodic progress updates. Before testing, review the News and Updates page and the current Candidate Handbook, as the format may change between cycles.
- Exam Day, NAVLE
No, the NAVLE is not available online. Our test delivery vendor, Prometric, administers the NAVLE via test centers only. The exam is computer-based testing (CBT) and offers secure testing for licensure, assessment, and certification with audio/video monitoring and data encryption. Test center locations administering the NAVLE are available on the Prometric website. For more information on the NAVLE, please review the NAVLE Candidate Handbook.

NAVLE - Scheduling & Exam Day
You can schedule your exam appointment once your Candidate Dashboard shows that your status is approved and your NAVLE Scheduling and Admission Permit has been issued. The permit will be emailed by NBME and will include instructions for scheduling your exam appointment.
- NAVLE, Prometric, Scheduling
The processing of your NAVLE Scheduling and Admission Permit can begin only after your verification documentation has been received and your application approved. Permit delivery timing varies and can take at least 4 weeks after approval for the test (and for accommodations, if applicable). In the meantime, you can monitor your NAVLE status via the NAVLE Candidate Dashboard.
- NAVLE, Prometric, Scheduling
Check your spam or junk folder for the communication. If you can’t find the email, contact our exam vendor at support@nbme.org. Important: Do not contact the NBME team if your NAVLE Scheduling and Admission Permit has not yet been issued, as they cannot assist candidates without a permit.
- NAVLE, Prometric, Scheduling
Please note that application deadlines are not related to when you'll receive the NAVLE Scheduling and Admission Permit or when you'll be able to set your test appointment with Prometric. You may receive your permit or schedule your exam appointment after the application deadline date. Permit delivery timing varies and can take at least 4 weeks after approval for the test (and for accommodations, if applicable). In the meantime, you can monitor your NAVLE status via the NAVLE Candidate Dashboard.

- Exam Day, Scheduling
It is recommended that you contact Prometric as soon as possible to reschedule your examination appointment – within the testing window – using the ProScheduler online system or the phone number provided in Section 1 of the permit. You will need to use the confirmation number Prometric provided when you made your initial testing appointment. To avoid Prometric fees, you should complete the rescheduling process at least two business days before your scheduled appointment. After rescheduling, be sure to record your rescheduling confirmation number for future reference. ICVA cannot retrieve this number for you.
- NAVLE, Prometric, Scheduling
A current, government-issued photo ID with your signature — a driver's license, passport, national ID, or state ID. Electronic/digital versions of an ID are not accepted. Bring the ID along with your NAVLE Scheduling and Admission Permit. Please be sure to bring these items with you. If you start the check-in process without these two requirements, you will not be admitted to the test and will be required to satisfy the Prometric Rescheduling Fee before rescheduling the exam within your eligibility period.
- Exam Day, Prometric, Scheduling
No guests are allowed at the test center at all. In the room itself: no bags, backpacks, or purses; no watches (analog or digital); no phones or other electronics; no personal calculators (an on-screen calculator is provided); no study materials; no outerwear or brimmed hats; and no food or drink except water in a clear, transparent bottle that will be inspected by staff. Personal items must be stored in a locker before you enter.
- Exam Day, Prometric
Report it to Prometric at the test center immediately, or through Prometric's website within 10 business days, and then file ICVA's online grievance form with the date, time, location, and details. See the Scoring, Retakes & Grievances section for the full grievance process.
- Exam Day, Grievances
Prometric will reschedule you at no cost within the same testing window, potentially at a different location, if the closure is due to severe weather, disaster, or a technical failure outside your control.
- Exam Day, Prometric, Scheduling
All candidates must adhere to the Testing Conditions and the NAVLE Candidate Agreement available in the NAVLE Candidate Handbook. Take the time to review and understand which behaviors are considered unacceptable during the exam by familiarizing yourself with the NAVLE Candidate Handbook and the Prometric test center policies, procedures, and FAQs to ensure you are aware of what is expected of you while on site. It is essential that you adhere to all policies, procedures, and rules of conduct outlined within the exam. Failing to do so may result in the cancellation of your exam, revocation of your certification, potential legal action, and a report to the relevant veterinary medicine board(s), potentially jeopardizing your chances for licensure.
- Exam Day, Prometric
A late cancellation or no-show triggers a nonrefundable Prometric Rescheduling Fee or Reinstatement Fee, charged directly by Prometric rather than by ICVA. You can contact Prometric via the ProScheduler or reach out to a Prometric representative using the contact details on your Scheduling and Admission Permit.

NAVLE - Scoring, Retakes, Exam Security & Grievances
Copying, recording, or discussing exam content; giving or receiving unauthorized help; viewing another candidate's screen; taking the exam for someone else; accessing AI tools such as ChatGPT; having a phone or internet-connected device in the room; making removable notes; refusing security screening; and disruptive or threatening behavior are all included as actions treated as violations. Consequences range from exam termination and non-refundable score cancellation to a temporary or permanent NAVLE ban, legal action, and disclosure to your licensing board(s).
- Exam Day, Exam Security
No. As part of the Candidate Agreement you sign when applying for the NAVLE, you commit to never discussing, disclosing, reconstructing, or distributing exam content — questions, answer choices, graphics, or even general topics — in any form, including online or on social media. This confidentiality obligation is enforced the same way as any other exam security violation.
- Exam Security
You would receive a written Notice of Investigation describing the alleged violation and a response deadline; your score may be withheld in the meantime. ICVA then issues a Draft Report, and you have 10 calendar days to dispute specific factual inaccuracies. If a violation is substantiated in the Final Report, sanctions can include a NAVLE ban, special conditions on future attempts, cost reimbursement, and disclosure to your licensing boards, AAVSB, or school. You may appeal only the Draft Report's factual accuracy or the sanctions themselves, in writing within 10 days, to a 3-person Appeal Panel whose decision is final.
- Exam Security
Grievances cover problems with exam administration or testing conditions that negatively affected your performance — test-center staff conduct, eligibility issues, an incorrectly administered accommodation, technical failures, disruptive environmental conditions, or a site closure. File within 10 business days of your test date using ICVA's online form; incomplete or late submissions are not reviewed. You should also file directly with Prometric (on-site or via their website) within the same window. Investigations can take up to 60 days, after which ICVA follows up with a final response.

Effective with the March 2026 testing window, every candidate — regardless of testing history — receives five fresh attempts. Attempts made before December 1, 2025, do not count against this new limit, and the prior waiver process has been discontinued entirely in favor of this flat, equal 5-attempt rule for everyone, including candidates who had already used five or more attempts under the old system.
- NAVLE, Retake Policy
If you apply for the NAVLE but do not go to the Prometric testing center and start the tutorial — which marks the beginning of the exam — it will not count as an attempt under the NAVLE retake policy’s 5-attempt limit. To take the exam during a future testing window, you will need to apply during a subsequent application period and pay the applicable application fee.
- Fees, Retake Policy
It depends on why it was cancelled. If ICVA cancels your score for candidate-specific validity concerns (not misconduct), you may retest once without paying the application fee again — a second such cancellation would require full payment — and the attempt would count toward your 5 attempt limit. If the cancellation was for a systemic reason (a compromised exam form, a technical failure, an administration error, or third-party misconduct not your fault), that attempt does not count toward your lifetime limit.

Scores post online roughly 4–5 weeks after your testing window closes. Once scores are available, you'll get an email from NBME with instructions to log into MyNBME to access your individual score report PDF. Your report shows pass/fail status, a scaled score from 200–800 (425 is passing), and a diagnostic breakdown by content area. There are no re-scores or appeals of a released NAVLE result. Your report is accessible online for approximately one year. After that time, if you need a duplicate PDF you would need to order a copy for $25 through the Score Report Order Form.
- NAVLE, Scoring
No. Every scored item on the NAVLE uses all-or-none scoring: 0 or 1 point per item. There is no partial credit granted for selecting an answer that is reasonable and incorrect, or for not selecting an answer to a test question. The NAVLE uses a single best-answer format, meaning more than one answer choice may include information that is true or clinically reasonable. That's by design: it's what allows the exam to test clinical judgment rather than simple recall. However, only one answer choice is designated as correct for scoring purposes, and full credit is given only when that answer is selected. Selecting any other choice, even a closely related one, earns no credit for that item.
- NAVLE, Scoring
Test forms are not customizable. All candidates see one of a set of fixed forms of comparable difficulty built to the NAVLE blueprint. Every item on the NAVLE is developed and then reviewed and approved by committee members drawn from the different geographic regions represented by the exam. This cross-regional review exists specifically to ensure that approved content is accurate and appropriate across all regions. For more detail on exam development, review, and scoring, see NAVLE 101 at icva.net.
- NAVLE, Scoring
If it has been more than a year since you tested and your NAVLE score report is no longer available in MyNBME, you may order a duplicate for $25 through the Score Report Order Form. Before submitting the form, please look up your ICVAID and have your date of birth, name, testing window, and email address ready. Your duplicate report will be emailed within two business days. Please note that the PDF is for your personal records and cannot be submitted to a licensing board.

If you later need your score sent to a different or additional jurisdiction, that's handled after score release through the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) VAULT score-transfer service. This process takes about 7–14 business days and carries its own fee.
- Fees, ICVA ID, Licensing Boards, Scoring
Check your NAVLE Candidate Dashboard to confirm the agency of application you listed on your application. When your NAVLE score is posted, your selected licensing board is granted online access to your score report, and this access will be available for one year after the scores are released.

If you plan to retake the NAVLE, start by reviewing the information in your NAVLE score report, which details your performance in different content areas. Additionally, utilize the NAVLE resources available on the ICVA website. If you need information about what type of veterinary work you are legally allowed to do before passing the NAVLE and obtaining your license, please contact your licensing board.

NAVLE Self-Assessment (Practice Exam)
The NAVLE Self-Assessment is a purchasable, web-based practice tool built from retired NAVLE items, following the same content blueprint as the real exam but shorter. It gives you an immediate score report with a projected NAVLE score range and a performance breakdown by content area. A good result is a strong signal, not a guarantee — it's most predictive when taken under standard-paced timing, in one sitting, close to your actual NAVLE date.
- NAVLE, NAVLE Self-Assessment
No, they're separate. You register for the NAVLE Self-Assessment through its own ordering process, independent of your NAVLE application / Candidate Dashboard login. Activation emails come from selfassess@icva.net — check your spam folder if you don't see one after ordering.
- Dashboard, ICVA ID, NAVLE Self-Assessment
Order at least 7 days before your desired start date — anything closer isn't guaranteed to deliver on time. Once it launches, you have 30 days to complete it, with the ability to pause and resume between sections (a submitted block, however, cannot be revisited).
- Deadlines, NAVLE Self-Assessment
You can take any form of the NAVLE self-assessment as many times as you choose. Please keep in mind once you complete a NAVLE Self-Assessment, you will need to satisfy the fee to take the assessment again.
- Deadlines, NAVLE Self-Assessment
The NAVLE Self-Assessment score may be predictive but does not guarantee passing the NAVLE. The NAVLE Self-Assessments helps identify strengths and weaknesses, guides study strategies, and can also serve as a potential predictor of your NAVLE score if taken under standard timing conditions, in a single sitting and within a few days of the NAVLE.
- NAVLE Self-Assessment
Yes — faculty and staff can use a separate voucher order form for class-wide bulk orders, rather than each student ordering individually. See the companion ICVA Partner FAQ for details available for school staff.

NAVLE Self-Assessment - Formats, Costs & Timing
The NAVLE Self-Assessment is built from retired NAVLE items, following the same content blueprint as the real exam but shorter: 200 questions in 4 blocks of 50 (versus 360 in 12 blocks on the real NAVLE).
- NAVLE, NAVLE Self-Assessment
Four English forms (Forms 1, 2, 3 and 4) and three French forms (Forms 1, 2 and 4). Regular forms (English/French Form 1, and English Form 3) cost $50 and give you a projected score range plus a content-area performance breakdown. Expanded feedback forms (English/French Forms 2 and 4) cost $65 and additionally show you the correct answers for any questions you missed. Each form exists in only one version — retaking the same form repeats the same content.
- Fees, NAVLE Self-Assessment
Standard-Paced gives you 55 minutes per 50-question block (220 minutes total) and roughly mirrors real NAVLE pacing — this is the mode that's been validated as predictive of your likely NAVLE score. Self-Paced gives you double the time (110 minutes per block, 440 minutes total) and is intended for candidates who need, or are considering seeking, extended-time accommodations on the real exam.
- Accommodations, NAVLE, NAVLE Self-Assessment
Once you complete a block – or the entire NAVLE Self-Assessment – it locks, and you will no longer have access to review questions and change answers. If the time limit expires before you finish answering questions in a block, the section will close and you will not have access to the remaining questions.

Species Specific Exams
These exams (Companion Animal Medicine or Equine Medicine) are available only through state or territorial licensing boards — individual candidates cannot order one directly. If your board requires one as part of your licensure process, your board coordinates scheduling and access with ICVA.
- Eligibility, Licensing Boards, SSE (Species Specific Exam)
Boards may use these exams as part of a disciplinary proceeding, to evaluate the competency of a veterinarian already licensed elsewhere who is seeking licensure in a new jurisdiction, or for other licensure-related determinations at the board's discretion. The scope of the examination is narrower than the NAVLE, focusing specifically on companion animal or equine medicine.
- Eligibility, SSE (Species Specific Exam)
Each exam is 100 multiple-choice questions (two forms available per exam type), delivered on a secure web-based platform and proctored either in person at your licensing agency's office or remotely via video software. The fee is $400 per exam form. Before your board schedules a date, check the blockout date calendar to confirm the date you want isn't grayed out as unavailable.
- Fees, Scheduling, SSE (Species Specific Exam)
The Species Specific Exam content was last revised in summer 2019. If you have questions about content currency or the recommended passing standard, ask your licensing board or contact ICVA directly.
- SSE (Species Specific Exam)
After you complete the exam, ICVA sends the score to the licensing board, which then shares it with you.

VEA (Veterinary Educational Assessment)
The VEA (previously known as the Qualifying Examination) is a 240-item exam covering foundational basic sciences — anatomy (22%), physiology (23%), pharmacology (14%), microbiology (20%), and pathology (21%) — typically given mid-curriculum rather than at graduation. It's designed for veterinary schools to benchmark their students' grasp of the basics and track trends against peer institutions. Research has found the VEA to be the strongest available predictor of a student's eventual NAVLE performance, so many schools use it partly as an early-warning tool for at-risk students.
- NAVLE, VEA
Generally, no — the VEA is administered by veterinary schools to their own student cohorts, not purchased individually the way the NAVLE Self-Assessment is. If you're a student wondering whether or when your school offers it, check with your academic affairs office.
240 multiple-choice items in two blocks of 120, 132 minutes per block, with an optional 45-minute break between blocks. Of the 240 items, 200 count toward your score and 40 are unscored pretest items being evaluated for potential use in future exams. It's proctored, either on school/student computers in person or, depending on your school's setup, virtually.
- VEA
Yes, the ICVA offers 60 sample questions for the VEA.
- VEA
VEA - Scoring
After completing the VEA, your score report will be shared with your school. They are responsible for communicating individual candidate results.
- NAVLE, VEA
The VEA assesses foundational knowledge essential for clinical practice. Research has found the VEA to be the strongest available predictor of a student's eventual NAVLE performance, so many schools use it partly as an early-warning tool for at-risk students. However, there are no guarantees that performing well on the VEA will automatically mean a candidate will pass the NAVLE.

Wisconsin Laws and Rules Exam
It's required of all applicants for a Wisconsin veterinary license, per Wisconsin rule VE 1.14(2), covering state statutes and administrative code relevant to veterinary practice. The cost of the exam is $50. If you're not yet licensed anywhere, contact ICVA directly at wisconsin@icva.net to get started. If you're already licensed in another state, you must first get approval from the Wisconsin Veterinary Examining Board (608.224.4353 or datcpveb@wisconsin.gov) before ICVA will register you for the exam.
- Eligibility, Wisconsin
Yes — you may reference the Wisconsin Statutes 89 and Administrative Code while testing, and you can log in and out as needed. You have a 30-day window from when your eligibility starts to complete it.
- Wisconsin
Your score is available immediately upon completion and is automatically reported to the Wisconsin Board — no separate score transfer step is needed. If you registered but haven't received your access email, check your spam/junk folder first, then contact wisconsin@icva.net.
