ICVA Award

The ICVA established an award in 1999 to recognize people who have made significant personal contributions to the national examination program. Twenty-four (24) awards have been presented to date.

The 2025 ICVA Award was presented to Dr. John R. Boyce

At the June ICVA Board of Directors meeting, Dr. John R. Boyce was recognized with the ICVA Award in honor of his 27 years of dedicated service. Dr. Boyce’s tenure as CEO began when the organization was known as first the National Board Examination Committee (NBEC), and then the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (NBVME), becoming the International Council for Veterinary Assessment (ICVA) shortly after his retirement.

His involvement in assessment began in 1987, when Dr. Boyce attended a meeting of the NBEC and observed the extensive process of developing, validating, and administering exams. These formative experiences later shaped his leadership in veterinary assessments.

Dr. Boyce recently reflected on the lasting impact of ICVA’s work:

“It is clear to me personally, professionally, and as a society, we all stand on the shoulders of those who have gone before us. I hope ICVA will continue to assist veterinary licensing boards in their important role of public protection and work toward its vision of becoming a world leader in veterinary assessments.” — Dr. John Boyce

ICVA is grateful for the groundwork Dr. John Boyce created in the organization, for his years of encouragement and support for other veterinarians involved in veterinary assessment, and for the vision he inspired that continues to guide our organization today.
