The ICVA 2021 Assessment Grant Winners
Congratulations to the 2021 ICVA Assessment Grant Winners, Dr. India Lane and co-investigator Dr. Misty Bailey, for their proposal, “Assessing across the Curricula – University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine.”
The grant funds will be used to support revising learning outcomes, revising and tagging exam questions, and creating exam blueprints toward analyzing their curriculum map for potential divergence between declared, delivered, and learned curricula.
Long-term, this project will better prepare the faculty to determine if day-one competencies are being met, examine horizontal and longitudinal content alignment, and identify curricular
Q&A with Assessment Grant Winners
What gave you the idea for your proposal? Our college has struggled to complete a full curriculum map for some time, despite the strong value in such a map. Efforts tend to get started but aborted by other priorities, changes in platforms, changes in leadership and just plain loss of motivation. We have the opportunity with a new program (eMedley) to renew these efforts and have an excellent start with a full complement of course outcomes entered already. Given that the foundation of a curriculum map, and the foundation of quality instruction, are quality learning outcomes, we expanded the scope of the project to include support for writing objectives, mapping them and writing and tagging examination items. We don’t have the support personnel to provide much individualized help to faculty struggling with these efforts, so we are thrilled to have the grant to support them. I’m really excited to see how the one-on-one support is received and helps us make the case for more!
Are there any other contributors on this project you would like to recognize? We would like recognize Dr. J. Patrick Biddix, Associate Director of the Postsecondary Education Research Center (PERC), as well as Dr. Ashley Browning, who is the Compliance System Coordinator for Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and the entire team at the University of Tennessee Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies for the expertise they will bring to fulfill our goals.
What are you most excited about doing with the grant proceeds? We are very excited about the opportunity to be able to share what we learn about our curriculum mapping process and our resulting reports with other veterinary colleges, so they can use and adapt our process to fit their curricular development needs.
