An expanded testing window assists with candidate scheduling and test administration during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The NAVLE Application window is now open for the Fall 2020 testing window. The deadline for receipt of the application and fees by the ICVA office runs through August 1, 2020, 11:59 pm CDT, with no exceptions.

Requests for accommodations must also be received in the ICVA office by August 1, 2020, again with no exceptions. It is recommended to complete and provide the NAVLE Accommodation Request Process Packet as far in advance of the application deadline as possible.

ICVA recently announced two important updates for the Fall 2020 testing window:

  1. In anticipation of continued COVID-19 impact, instead of the typical four-week testing window, candidates can take the exam from September 1 through December 31, 2020.

The proactive decision to expand the testing window was made in coordination with our NAVLE collaborators, the National Board of Medical Examiners® (NBME®) and Prometric Testing Centers (PTC).

  2. To assist all candidates with their preparation, ICVA is offering one FREE web-based NAVLE Self-Assessment (SA) practice exam, available through December 31, 2020.

The NAVLE SA helps candidates identify their strengths and weaknesses while learning about the content and format of the examination.

This is the only available NAVLE study material comprised of retired NAVLE items and following a similar testing interface to the NAVLE.

Applying for the NAVLE is broken down into six simple steps:

  1. Submit the NAVLE application
Candidates applying through any of the 34 states that have ICVA as their designated NAVLE processor will submit both applications simultaneously by completing one form on the ICVA website. View the complete list of states/territories with NAVLE State Application Approvals processed by ICVA. Both the ICVA NAVLE application and NAVLE State application fees will be processed as a single credit card payment.

If a candidate chooses to seek approval through one of the other states that do not have ICVA as their designated NAVLE processor, they will continue to submit an ICVA NAVLE application and a separate NAVLE State Application (two applications). If you have any questions about this process, please contact us.

  1. Apply where you want to practice
If you are planning to practice in the U.S., apply with your state licensing board (or designated NAVLE processor). If you are going to practice in Canada, contact the Canadian National Examining Board at 631.236.1162, ext 116.

  2. Look for Scheduling and Admission Permits
Permits will be processed and released throughout the expanded application window for earlier exam scheduling.

  3. Schedule your testing appointment at Prometric Testing Centers
For best test center availability, candidates are encouraged to schedule their appointment as early as possible.

  4. Take the test
Appointments available from September 1 through December 31, 2020.

  5. Get your scores
Score reports releases will be monthly through the end of the year, with the last report in mid-January 2021 after the end of testing on December 31, 2020.
