NAVLE Structure Update Begins with October - November 2026 Testing Window
Beginning with the October–November 2026 testing window, the NAVLE will introduce updates to the exam’s structure, including shorter testing blocks with more frequent break opportunities, as well as enhancements to the testing interface and navigation experience.
Why is the NAVLE structure changing?
These updates are part of ICVA’s ongoing commitment to improving the testing experience and are in response to candidate feedback. The updates were made in coordination with our partners at the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) and in alignment with recent changes to other exams. Research on high-stakes testing has also shown that shorter testing blocks with more frequent breaks can help reduce fatigue, support more stable performance, and improve the overall testing experience.
What changes should I expect to see during the exam?
The content of the NAVLE and the total number of questions will not change. Here are the adjustments you can expect to see:
- Exam software improvements: The interface will include an updated design and improved keyboard navigation. It will also offer a new settings menu and the ability to adjust the contrast on images.
- Shorter block structure and timing: This will provide candidates with more opportunities for breaks between blocks. Please see below for the specific changes. As with the current test delivery software, candidates can only view items within their current block and are unable to return to previous blocks once they are closed.
You can find more information regarding the NAVLE exam structure in the 2026-2027 NAVLE Candidate Handbook.
